Add International Route, Wings Air Comes to Melaka

Medan, April 20th 2018 – One of the airlines company under Lion Air Group that serves flights with shorter and lower-cost distance and duration name Wings Air is back to expanding their international flight connectivity network by opening the new destination after successful opening to several destinations such a Kuching City and Miri City, Sarawak, Malaysia in last January and March 2018.  

This time the new route is coming from Medan through Kualanamu International Airport to Melaka City via Melaka International Airport, Malaysia. The flight will start operating on April 20, 2018 with a one time flight per day service using ATR 72-500 / 600 type aircraft that can carry about 72 passengers.

From Kualanamu, Wings Air will be scheduled to depart at 15.30 local time and arrive in Melaka at 18.00 local time with total duration about 90 minutes journey wearing flight number IW 1136, While the opposite route, from Melaka will fly at 18:25 local time and arrived at Kualanamu at 18:55 local time with flight number IW 1137.

“At a cost around Rp 800,000 now citizens of Medan and Melaka could connect with air transport that provides more durable and efficient travel of the cost offered, as well as Wings Air is an airline which has been guaranteed and recognized by IATA because has successfully completed the audit of operational safety and security management, so it is enrolled in IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audit) certification which is an auditor with international standard,” said Capt Redi Irawan, Operational Director of Wings Air.

Capt Redi added “The availability of this access is expected to certainly help develop growth in each region of both the main logistics industry of these two areas of trading and tourism, which is famous for the historical objects and high cultural values, also interesting course to bring in foreign tourists for a vacation to enjoy the beautiful cuisine of Medan and Melaka. It is also believed to further strengthen bilateral relations between Indonesia and Malaysia.”

As its known that Wings Air in 2018 has opened 3 access cross-country flights from Indonesia to Malaysia to Kuching Miri, and Melaka itself. Lion Air Group's other airline, Malindo Air, has just opened the Banda Aceh route to Penang and Kualanamu to Ipoh.

Wings Air believes that the passengers' passage on the Kualanamu route to Melaka and the reverse route could provide good figures with 80% load factor target and does not close the possibility with the addition of frequencies for the next time that Wings Air will be given, also will strengthened by their additional fleet about 4 units of ATR 72 -600 in this year.

Malaysia Airports managing director Datuk Badlisham Ghazali said, “We believe that this additional Melaka-Medan flight operated daily by Wings Air will be a major boost to the local tourism.”

Badlisham added that the new flight route will provide passengers with a faster option to get to Melaka from Medan and vice versa.

“As this is the first airline to provide the Melaka-Medan route, we are pleased with this connectivity whereby it also means additional airlines are operating from Melaka Airport. Wings Air is the second airline that is providing a regional connectivity from the airport after Malindo Air,” he continued.

Chandran Rama Muthy, CEO of Malindo Air said, “Our code share partnership has opened up abundant of opportunities and certainly strengthen our network and connectivity. We have observed positive business, trade and tourism traffic between both Malacca and Medan. The commencement of this route is anticipated to achieve 80% load factor target with possibility for additional frequencies in the near future.”

Currently Lion Air Group has previously operated at Kualanamu International Airport by serving flights to several domestic destinations such as Jakarta through Soekarno-Hatta and Halim Perdanakusuma, then Padang, Pekanbaru, Batam, Surabaya, Bandung, Denpasar, Banda Aceh, Palembang, Gunung Sitoli, Sibolga, Lhokseumawe, Meulaboh, Simeuleu, Silangit, Aek Godang, Takengon, Dumai, Sabang and Jambi, as well as international routes to Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Ipoh and Chennai. While at Melaka International Airport, Lion Air Group through Malindo Air is present serving flights to Pekanbaru and Penang.

By 2018, Wings Air has been present and operates in 108 domestic and international destinations to several cities in Malaysia such as Kuching and Miri, with a total frequency of more than 360 flights per day.
